University competition in the Year of Science 2024 – Freedom

For the Science Year 2024 proclaimed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Wissenschaft im Dialog (WiD) is once again inviting entries for a university competition on science communication, in which the German Rectors’ Conference is participating as a partner, as in previous years. Students, doctoral candidates and young researchers from all disciplines are invited to submit creative and interactive communication ideas on the topic of “freedom” (see attached slides). We are looking for proposals that bring citizens into conversation with researchers.

Freedoms often have to be fought for, defended, or renegotiated. In the year of the 75th anniversary of the German Basic Law and 35 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, a wide variety of dimensions of “freedom” can be the focus of submissions for the university competition: for example, in the context of inclusion and accessibility, democracy education, artistic freedom, climate protest and the freedom of future generations, dealing with artificial intelligence, etc.

The 12 best proposals will be rewarded with 10,000 euros each to implement the ideas and with workshops and training on science communication as well as admission to the alumni network of the university competition. Please find enclosed the call for proposals with the request to publicize it in your university in an appropriate way and to support students, PhD students and young researchers interested in applying. The application period ends on November 30, 2023.
All information on the call for applications and the competition can be found at www.hochschulwettbewerb.net/2024 WiD will also be offering consultation sessions to all interested parties via Zoom on November 1 and 20.

Join the Bundesweite Vorlesetag 2023!

Germany reads aloud – join in!

Since 2004, Stiftung Lesen, together with DIE ZEIT and Deutsche Bahn Stiftung, have been advocating for (to inspire children and adults about) the importance of reading aloud every year on the third Friday in November.
While only 1,900 people took part in the beginning, we are now proud to have around 800,000 participants throughout Germany.
On 17 November 2023, the Bundesweite Vorlesetag will take place for the 20th time. This years’s motto is “Vorlesen verbindet”!
Because reading together unites and creates closeness. But it can do much more: It is the most important prerequisite for learning to read well, encourages children to discover the world curiously – and is the key to their future. This year’s motto puts a spotlight on this! Whether at home, at school or in kindergarten, between generations, different countries of origin and cultures: connections strengthen children, promote exchange and transcend borders – they create cohesion and are as diverse as the actions around the Bundesweite Vorlesetag.
