January 18th, 2023

Dear fellow students,

we hope that you had a good start into the new year and were able to use the lecture-free time to relax.

But time does not stand still and so the new year is in full swing again. This marks the beginning of the last half of the semester for us, which means: exams, re-registration for summer semester 2023 and numerous surveys about studying at FAU. In this newsletter, you'll find out why it's worth answering the surveys. Another important topic in the new year is the one-time payment of 200€ to students announced by the federal government due to rising energy prices. We will keep you up to date on this. If you are interested in something more crafty or musical, we've provided a DIY idea to let your leftover candles shine again and information on the student concert in this newsletter.

We wish you a lot of success in the new year and in your upcoming exams!

Best regards
Sarah und Lars

Stuve-News

Fun Fact: News stands for North, East, West, South.
News from Stuve
At the end of last year, the Speaker's Council had a meeting with the Executive Board of the university. Among other things, we discussed the problem of housing shortages in Erlangen and the current problem with the expensive semester ticket because it is unclear, how and when the 49€ ticket will be introduced. We also discussed the further development of Campo, where the Stuve will provide feedback and input for improvements of Platform. The energy-saving measures at FAU were also discussed, and it became clear that the savings in electricity in particular don't match the target of 15%. Therefore we would like to appeal to everyone: Please pay attention to this at the university. You can find out more about saving energy at FAU at https://www.fau.eu/fausavesenergy/ .

Over the last few weeks and months, we have been working intensively on the future of the semester ticket, and have had numerous discussions with the VGN, Studierendenwerk, university and other universities. In a few days we will be able to say how it will continue in the summer semester. Just today, the CSU Bavaria announced a 29€ ticket for students from the coming winter semester. Whether this is an empty promise or serious politics, we will see. We will stay tuned!

Since the last newsletter, the Student Council has met once. We discussed future actions and strategies of the Stuve and the Student Council. We hope to present some of these ideas to you in the future.

Furthermore, there is a position open in the Speaker's Council, which will be elected at the next session of the Student Council on February 9th. If you are interested in the position and would like to learn more about it, please feel free to contact us (stuve-sprat@fau.de)! All students of FAU can apply here, regardless of being elected in other committees.

If you are interested in working in one of the committees of the Stuve, please contact us (stuve-sprat@fau.de). A list of the committees can be found at ttps://stuve.fau.de/refs-aks/.
Why answering surveys is worth your while - the measures after the last FAUSt survey:
Every year students can participate in the FAUSt survey and give the university feedback on the study conditions. The representatives in the university-wide committee for teaching and studies (Uni-LuSt) would like to present some results from our last meetings in which data gathered in the 2022 survey was used to make adjustments at each faculty to make studying at FAU better.

At all faculties, the so-called "onboarding" should run better in the future - that is, the period of the first year of study when you first have to get your bearings. In the future, all faculties want to place a strong emphasis on face-to-face teaching, but also experiment with online services for more in-depth and supplementary studying.

In the following tabs you will find more information on the measures at the different faculties of FAU.

Info-Event for Students in Teacher Training
Students in teacher training often have many questions regarding the "Referendariat" (training phase after university). The GEW (Gewerkschaft Erziehung und Wissenschaft = Workers' Union for Education and Science) and FSI Lehramt Nürnberg (student representation for teacher training in Nuremberg) therefore invite experienced teacher trainers and colleagues which are in Referendariat right now to give basic information and answer all questions. The event will be in German.

Candle made from candle leftovers

Let the candles from the holidays shine their light once more

What you need:

  • Empty, fireproof vessel (e.g. cup, tin can with coaster, fireproof thick glass) - Caution, danger of fire and bursting!
  • Wax remnants or wax flakes
  • Wooden stick (the wider the better; e.g. popsicle sticks)
  • Rubber bands
  • Olive oil
Step 1: Soak the wooden stick in oil for several hours (at least 24 hours). The wider the stick, the better the candle will burn later.

Step 2: Collect the wax remnants in a tin can and let them melt slowly in a water bath.

Step 3: Stretch two rubber bands side by side vertically around the vessel so that they stretch parallel to each other across the bottom, sides and opening of the vessel. Then move the bands around until they are nicely centred. Remove the wooden stick from the oil and place it in-between the rubber bands.

Step 4: Pour the melted wax carefully and slowly into the jar. This is important because the wax can easily splatter.

When the wax is solid, trim the wooden stick with clippers to about 1 cm above the wax. The crater that has now formed is no problem.  Just fill it up again with liquid wax so that the wooden stick still sticks out 2-3 mm.
