News from the Stuve | 11/2024 | | Everything from committees & working groups of the Stuve to FSIs & university groups Editors: Clara Linke, Christian Peppel | Dear fellow students, These are crazy times and for a change not at FAU. We hope you are all keeping a cool head and finding your way in this increasingly chaotic environment. For inspiration, you'll find all kinds of events and offers in this mail to help you make the short days a little longer. In this issue, you can read a first summary of the plenary assembly of all students that took place last week and also find a short article about the Dies Academicus. To mark the start of exam registration this week, we have also put together a short guide on who to contact if you have any problems. Of course, we hope that Campo will be merciful to us again this year. Of course, we would like to take this opportunity to remind you once again of the abolition of compulsory registration for repeat exams, which we have been campaigning for at FAU for so long. When registering, make sure you don't forget any modules. In the course of the upcoming elections, we are particularly concerned with the future of student mobility, as there seems to be new information every week about how or whether the Deutschlandticket will continue to exist. We remain in active dialogue with those responsible and involved and as soon as a result is foreseeable, we will of course inform you directly. | | The future of the €29 ticket As already reported in the last newsletter, the Deutschlandticket will be €9 more expensive from January 1, which means a price increase to €38 for us. If you want to cancel your subscription, please remember to give notice by the 10th of the previous month. At the beginning of the month, the Stuve's mobility department also held talks with Joachim Herrmann, Member of the Erlangen State Parliament and Bavarian Minister of the Interior, to discuss solutions for a cheaper public transport ticket. However, any future model is dependent on the long-term future of the Deutschlandticket. The subsidies from the federal and state governments for the Deutschlandticket in general are currently fixed until 2025, but it is currently unclear how and whether the ticket will be continued at all after that. If the Deutschlandticket is abolished, a possible return to a semester ticket will have to be discussed within the university (this means us students in particular) and renegotiated with the VGN beforehand. If you are interested in the topic of mobility, you are cordially invited to attend the next departmental meeting (online) on December 6 at 16:00 at stuve.me/mobil-zoom. | | | On a personal note: fourth attempt and mandatory registration You will no doubt have heard at one point or another that the efforts of the Stuve and especially the Department of Teaching and Studies have led to the introduction of a fourth examination attempt and the cancellation of compulsory registration for repeat examinations. You can read about the exact framework conditions elsewhere, for example in the paragraph on exam registrations in this newsletter, because we are concerned with something else here. Student engagement has actually led to a change, and a really big one at that, which will be visible to all FAU students from this winter semester onwards. Far too often, our work gets lost in some kind of regulations and is only really noticeable several semesters later. Nevertheless, we are continuing to make improvements and are working on making the university not only a ‘place to be’ but also a ‘place you like to be’. And even though we were very happy that both the university management, the President of FAU and the newly elected Vice President for Education spoke out in favor of our proposals during the debate, nothing would have changed in this matter if we as students had not continued to push forward our ideas, supported by our arguments. What we want to tell you with this article is that commitment is worthwhile and can lead to damn big changes. If you don't know where to start, take a look at our website, where we list many student council initiatives, university groups and working groups. Just write to the contact addresses or follow an Instagram account, the entry barriers are usually non-existent. Above all, we ourselves benefit from a more active student body. | | | Looking back at the USC The main topic of this year's General student assembly (USC) was diversity. After a welcoming address by Vice President Prof. Hirsch, the Queer working group, the Inclusion and Equal Opportunities working group and the Office for Gender and Diversity gave insights into their work in the first part. In the second part of the VaS, the plenary session voted on the proposals submitted. Here is an impression of the VaS for all those who were unable to attend. The Queer working group started things off by introducing itself. The working group is not only a contact and networking point for queer people at the FAU, but also organizes its own events such as readings or summer festivals and is involved in events organized by other initiatives in the region. While the Queer working group has been in existence for many years, the Inclusion and Equal Opportunities working groupv, which emerged from the student initiative todei, is still being established. The aim is to make FAU a role model for other universities in Bavaria when it comes to inclusion. Finally, Harriet Ziegler introduced the Office for Gender and Diversity, which deals with all dimensions of diversity from gender and ideology to social background. They are currently working on an awareness concept for the university, for example. Advice is also offered in cases of discrimination. Questions were asked primarily on the topic of the gender ban before moving on to the motions. The majority of the more than 20 motions submitted were discussed. The remaining motions will be discussed by the Student Council at its next meeting. The motions covered a wide range of topics, including accessibility, parent-friendly teaching and a room of silence in the main library. Some of the topics have been on the Stuve's agenda for some time, such as affordable public transport and the demand for a long-term, predictable ticket offer for students. The Stuve's mobility working group has been actively campaigning for this in recent years. This brief impression of the USC not only shows that there are many areas where there is a need for improvement, but also numerous opportunities to get involved and get involved. Be it in a Stuve working group, in a student initiative or in projects such as those run by the Office for Gender and Diversity. Your ideas are needed to achieve improvements together. | | | DIES Academicus As every year, FAU's birthday party took place on 4th November. In addition to the professors and employees working at FAU, many guests from politics and society were also present. Even though students are invited every year, we as the largest status group are massively underrepresented. So just make a note of the date for next year. The event is always scheduled for 04 November. After the ceremony, the joint reception with food and drinks is also highly recommended. In addition to the usual greetings and congratulations, the Stuve also criticised the current building situation at the FAU in her speech this year and criticised the state government's gender policy, among other things. A big thank you went to all students who volunteer in FSIs, HSGs or other groups at FAU. If you would like to watch the whole event, or a few excerpts worth watching, you can catch up on the recording, which was also broadcast on television, at FAU-TV. | | |
