Everything from committees & working groups of the Stuve to FSIs & university groups

Editors: Christian Peppel, Büşra Başol

Dear fellow students,

This year we are starting the new semester particularly late due to Easter. This not only means that the university elections and the Bergkirchweih take place at the same time this year, but also that the summer festival calendar is particularly tight. You can see all the events that have been announced so far here in the events section.

However, FAU has not been quiet in recent months. The new Competence Centre for Teaching was founded, where numerous offers and information on the topic of good teaching are bundled. The Stuve also has representatives there who contribute the student perspective to the endeavours.

Representatives from the Department of Teaching and Studies have also met to discuss the quality and compilation of module handbooks with FAU. We will certainly see an improvement in the current situation over the next few semesters.

Competing in the university election

This year, the university election will take place from 4 June to 12 June. But maybe you want to go one step further this year instead of just casting your vote. All students enrolled at FAU can also stand for election and be elected themselves. Students come together to form lists that can be submitted as a joint election proposal. All you need is a few fellow students and a short list of supporters.

To be able to stand in the election, however, you must have submitted the applications by 6 May. You can find the exact information, applications and deadlines on the website of the FAU election office.

If you are interested in the positions to be elected in the university elections, you can find an overview on our website. If you don't want to put up your own list, you can always join an existing one, the candidates of the last years serve as a good first overview.

Legal agreement for SHKs

The last round of collective bargaining saw the first nationwide agreement on minimum standards for student assistants (SHK) - new requirements will also apply in Bavaria from summer semester 2024. The basis is an agreement under the law of obligations between the Tarifgemeinschaft deutscher Länder (TdL) and the trade unions. This is legally binding, but not a collective agreement - claims can only be asserted by the trade unions.

What's new?

Minimum wage: SHKs will receive at least €13.25/hour from summer semester 2024, €13.98 from summer semester 2025.
Contract term: A minimum term of 12 months is recommended.

Problems with implementation: In Bavaria, there are reports of attempts to circumvent the directive, e.g. through contracts with lower categorisations or by circumventing the terms. There is also criticism that upper limits are being reduced, although the directive actually prohibits this.

The new standards are a step forward - but they must be actively demanded. Pay attention to your contracts, report problems (e.g. to GEW Bayern or Stuve) and stay informed!

Introduction of the new Speakers' Council

New term of office, new spokesperson! Who represents the interests of the student body at FAU during this term of office? Some of them told us who they are and what moves them.
Michael Ruppert - Student Senator

Hi, I’m Michael, and I’m currently pursuing my Master’s in Philosophy. I was involved in Sprat from 2020 to 2023, then served for a year as the spokesperson for the Bavarian Student Council (BayStuRa). Now I’m back and am serving as a Sprat member and student senator.

This term in office I have already had the opportunity to literally break down walls and in doing so, draw attention to the severe underfunding of our university system and lack of maintenance support from the Bavarian government. I look forward to a constructive and inspiring term ahead, and I’m here to listen to your ideas, concerns, and critiques. Together, let’s make our FAU a better place for everyone!

Ann-Sophie Scholl - Student Senator

Hey 😊 my name is Ann-Sophie (she/her), I'm studying human medicine and I'm in my third term in the Sprat. This year, I'm once again representing you in the Senate. I am also a delegate to the Bavarian State Student Council, a member of the ZGS and spokesperson for the FSV Med.

During this term of office, I would like to continue to work to ensure that no students feel excluded or discriminated against at the university and to do improve the network between the FSVs and students in Bavaria. If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to write to me at any time. 😊

Your Ann-Sophie

Departments of Stuve

There are several student groups within the Student Representation that deal with a wide range of topics at and around FAU. We would like to introduce you to these departments in more detail in this and the next issues of the newsletter. In this issue, we start with the Queer Department and the Public Relations Department.
Queer Department

Hi everyone! We are the Referat Queer of the student representation here at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität. We are here to take care of the representation of all sexual and gender identities outside the hetero or cis norm.

We offer a space for queer people and topics, take part in university politics and diversity work, organise events, connect with the community, debate, and inform. Some examples of our work include meetings with the heads of university about topics such as changes coming with the self-determination law and the gender-neutral language ban, cooperation with the office for gender and diversity, yearly participation at CSD Erlangen, but also community events like our recent button-making event, at which we spent some time together crafting badges.

At our weekly organisational meetings, interested people can visit flexibly and take part (you'll find the schedule in our instagram bio @referatqueerfau). This is where we discuss current topics, upcoming events and more. We are especially thrilled by new ideas being brought in. Additionally, we like to connect with (queer) people and organizations within and outside the FAU.

The word “Queer” as part of our name is an umbrella term for people identifying as LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bi, trans*, (gender) queer/questioning, inter*, asexual, aromantic, agender + everyone else who identifies themselves with the queer community).

We hope to see you at our get-to-knowing meeting on the 6th of May at 6:30 pm, at the Stuve-building (Turnstrasse 7, Erlangen).

You can find more about us on our Instagram page, @referatqueerfau, or contact us via email, stuve-queer@fau.de.

PR Department

We are the students who deal with the public perception of the Stuve. This newsletter is certainly our biggest project. In addition, we also work on the design of new stickers and other merchandise, as well as the Stuve's Instagram channel. We make sure that the events organised by the student groups reach a wider audience and that people get to see what we in the student council are up to all the time.

Anyone can take part, no previous knowledge is necessary. The next meeting of the Ref PR will take place on 05.05.2025 from 7:00 pm via Zoom statt. If you would like to contact us in any other way first, please send us an email to stuve-pr@fau.de.

Echt oder Fake

If you've always wanted to win huge amounts of noodles, mate or muesli (or if you just want to have a fun evening), then come to H11 in Cauerstr. 11 on the evening of 8 May and try to expose your lecturers during their real or fake lectures. ‘Echt oder Fake’ is the perfect mix of science slam and lecture theatre quiz that you really don't want to miss!

The whole thing is organised by the FSV-Nat, but students from all faculties are welcome. Admission is from 6pm, group size is about 3-6 people and snacks and drinks will be available. The first lecture starts at 6.30 pm. We look forward to seeing you there!
