Everything from committees & working groups of the Stuve to FSIs & university groups

Editors: Christian Peppel, Büşra Başol

This semester has once again flown by far too quickly. We hope you had plenty of variety during the semester at the numerous summer parties that were organized and were able to enjoy the weather and the good atmosphere there before your exams.

As every summer semester, university elections were held again this year. The results of the election and information about which positions are open for candidates at this year's constituent meeting of the Student Council can also be found below. The positions and activities of the Stuve were once again presented to the newly elected members at the Stuve Symposium. This year, we recorded the nearly hour-long presentation and will make the video available on the website as soon as it has been properly edited.

We are also involved in the discussions currently taking place at FAU regarding the increasingly critical construction situation. We have already been able to discuss some of our questions with FAU in a meeting on the subject of construction, and we will inform you of further developments as soon as possible.

We would like to thank our loyal readers for their support over the past few years and wish you all the best for the rest of the semester. 🥚

BayStuRa against the “Law on the Promotion of the Bundeswehr” in Bavaria

The Bavarian State Student Council decisively rejected the “Law on the Promotion of the Bundeswehr in Bavaria” a year ago. It criticized the fact that students were not included in the legislative process, even though they are directly affected as part of the university landscape. BayStuRa calls for the student perspective to be given equal consideration in future.

The state's encroachment on academic freedom and the associated individual freedom of conscience is seen as particularly problematic. The State Ministry's ability to oblige universities to cooperate with the Bundeswehr jeopardizes the independence of research, damages Bavaria as an academic location, and sets a dangerous precedent for the undermining of fundamental freedoms.

The very vaguely defined “relevance to national security” as the basis for this obligation opens the door to abuse and is neither legally nor practically clearly formulated. The BayStuRa agrees with the criticism of the Universität Bayern e.V., which also warns of constitutional problems. In addition, mandatory cooperation with the German Armed Forces represents a considerable encroachment on the freedom of conscience of researchers. Many cannot reconcile it with their conscience that their work could potentially be used for military purposes and thus harm people.

Instead of forcing universities to conduct military research, BayStuRa calls for the ethical self-determination and autonomy of universities to be respected. They must remain places of free thought and peaceful, sustainable research - even and especially in times of global uncertainty.

Evaluation success at the Faculty of Engineering

Following efforts by the student representatives of the Faculty of Engineering, a change to the evaluation concept at the Faculty of Engineering was decided this July. From winter semester 2025/26, the evaluation results of courses with at least five participants will be made available to students of the Faculty via a Studon group. The results of all scale questions for each profile line will be presented in comparison to the mean values of the course type in the corresponding semester, and the response rate will be shown. Free text comments are not published. We hope that this measure will contribute to better transparency regarding the quality of courses and help students, particularly when choosing elective subjects.

Committee Elections at the Constituent Student Council Meeting

There are numerous committees at Stuve in which various student interests are represented. These range from committees of various student groups to the use of funds and committees on topics such as sustainability. You can find an overview of all the possible roles in which you and your fellow students can represent yourselves on our website and in the next few days on Instagram.

You are welcome to apply by sending a short, informal email to the Council stuve-konvent@fau.de and/or drop by the constituent meeting on July 25 in the Senate Hall (02.4008) at Freyerslebenstr. 1. The meeting will be closed to the public from 1:30 p.m., but will be open to the public approximately one hour after the start for the election of the various committees.

Discussion on construction topics with the FAU

Last week, the building topics discussion with the university administration of the FAU took place again. We would like to give you an overview of the topics discussed here:

FAU in general

The general operating costs, for which there has been no funding from the Free State for years, place a heavy burden on the building situation at FAU. Over 60% of the buildings are both very old and unrenovated. They have to be massively cross-subsidized with our own funds. Most of the current new buildings, which are financed by funds other than building maintenance, will not be completed until 2029. Gender-neutral toilets are included in the planning phase for new buildings, but are not a priority for renovations.

Faculty of Medicine

The dismantling of Henkestraße 42 will begin this year. Planning is underway for the Anatomy building for 2031/32. The Physio building in Waldstrasse is in need of major refurbishment, and a new replacement building is being planned.

Faculty of Natural Sciences

The lack of space in the Geozentrum is being compensated for with replacement lectures in the Kollegienhaus. No progress has been made with the construction of new GGuppen workrooms; fire safety is the priority here. There are no plans to improve the basic facilities for water dispensers and seating on campus.

Faculty of Arts and Humanities

The ventilation situation in Sports Science is currently unproblematic; an intensive exchange with occupational safety is underway.

Faculty of Law and Economics

Due to space problems, parts of Findelgasse are to be relocated to Fürth Uferstadt or the AEG site. Central water dispensers and more seating were requested.

Faculty of Engineering

The Studierendenwerk is close to concluding a contract with DHL for the planned DHL packing station at "Café Südblick". As planned, no short-term repairs will be carried out at Roter Platz; instead, long-term solutions will be used to guarantee the stability of the panels.

Referendum on preserving housing won

On 29 June, the people of Erlangen voted and the majority voted in favour of protecting the flats in the hospital district. Following a motion if Die Linke. SDS, the Stuve argued in favour of a "yes" vote in the referendum. Unfortunately, the university management opposed the referendum without even consulting the Stuve. The fact that the decision was nevertheless in favour shows once again that the issue of affordable housing is a burning issue for the people of Erlangen. The Erlanger Nachrichten newspaper aptly commented: "The Free State [...] in particular should feel that it has an obligation. Affordable housing for carers is everyone's business; lukewarm funding promises are not enough."

Youthtopia 2025: Celebrate Global Justice with us in Magdeburg

Youthtopia is an event for young people between the ages of 16 and 27 who want to stand up for global justice and will take place from August 29-31 in Magdeburg. We are very much looking forward to creative activities, diverse workshops, intercultural fellowship and helping to shape the Bread for the World youth. This year's theme: JUSTICE.

At Youthtopia, we want to look for ways to achieve justice, discuss, explore and last but not least: celebrate! Youthtopia focuses on the global community. That's why we especially invite volunteers and students from other countries who are currently living in Germany.
