No to shortening opening hours and closing branch libraries!

Protest against shorter opening hours and closing of branch libraries!

Since April 3rd, the opening hours in more than 20 branch libraries in Erlangen’s city centre and on the southern campus have been shortened. Two were even completely closed. According to our information, jobs have been cut, which mainly affects student assistants. However, all other students are also affected, because libraries are not just storage places for books, but also essential working and study areas, as well as meeting places for students of a discipline. With shorter opening hours, the possibilities of scientific work and the successful preparation of examinations are massively restricted. Even without cuts, the learning places are already limited and overcrowded, especially in exam peak phases.

We stand in solidarity with our colleagues whose employment contracts have not been renewed. Student employees, who generally suffer from precarious employment, are once again left out in the cold. For us students it’s getting more difficult to study. Saving in education and science must end!

We demand:
– (Re-) Increase the number of jobs in the university libraries!
– Guaranteed preservation of all libraries!
– Stable basic funding of the universities by the Free State!
– Better working conditions and remuneration of student employees as well as their inclusion in the collective agreement of the federal states (TV-L)!
– Creation of new learning and working spaces for students – improvements and no deterioration of the quality of studies!

In order to express this grievance and to bring our demands to the public, we call for a demonstration.
On 26.04. at 6 p.m. on the Schlossplatz, we call on the university and the Free State not to make life even more difficult for us and to finally invest more money for science and education!
