Stuve recap of the term 21/22

The present term in office has presented FAU’s student representation with the challenges associated with returning to face-to-face teaching and the resurgence of social interaction amongst students. After lots of communication with the Occupational Health and Safety and Facilities Team, we were able to announce a return to campus for face-to-face meetings and events! Unfortunately, the global pandemic has led to reduced recruitment of new student reps, leading to a reduction in personnel and project capacity. However, despite our dwindling numbers and the associated loss of knowledge, generally passed on between generations of student representatives, we have begun making a strong comeback! Many of our events are back and here to stay, we’ve tossed out outdated protocols in favor of more modern procedures and even have founded a few new groups. With that said here is an overview of what we have collectively achieved in the past academic year!

As exemplified by the newest edition of our Newsletter, one of the first major ideas implemented during our time in office was a complete redesign of the Stuve newsletter. Over 100 hours were invested in a quest to deliver our News in a more digestible, engaging, and consistent format. We extend our gratitude to Lara Ebbinghaus and Michael Ruppert (see credits at the bottom of the Newsletter) for their hard work and dedication to designing and creating this new format.

Through communication with the university’s leadership team and board members, we have been able to overcome several structural challenges. In particular, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to Prof. Dr. Bärbel Kopp, our Vice President of Education, for her ongoing support, lending an open ear, and regular meetings. We also explicitly thank Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger, our President, for the opportunity to regularly check in and do brainstorming sessions. In the meetings with the general university management, we discussed various problems and opportunities at our university. We are grateful for how you foster open discourse, particularly with regard to fostering a sense of belonging and community at our FAU and recognizing those who serve our university and the broader community.

Furthermore, in collaboration with the universities leadership team, we were proud to launch 3 vaccination campaigns. With the support of volunteers and our medical students, more than 2,000 students were vaccinated against Covid-19.

Unfortunately, communication with the university management has not been fruitful in our quest to have the university provide free period products in its bathrooms. While a working group was founded to address this issue, it has sadly already been shut down again since the dragging on of this project caused multiple people to finish their studies or be preoccupied with other projects. Despite the challenges the project faces, we, the Speaker’s Council, will continue to fight for free period products and honor the Student Council’s position paper on the matter.

Through failure we learn and grow – however, for each failure this academic year, the successes were numerous and plentiful! In a further mammoth effort, the Body of Student Representatives collected more then 5,000 signatures throughout 2 petitions, to campaign for a 365 Euro annual regional public transport fare. It was an honor to officially hand the petition signed by residents of the city of Erlangen over to Mayor Florian Janik. Sincerest gratitude and credit be given where it is due; to the AK Semesterticket, who coordinated and implemented the event.

Last but certainly not least, it would be amiss to not discuss the ongoing invasion of Ukraine – a conflict in which our community is deeply and emotionally involved. The crisis spurred action amongst the Body of Student Representatives and the university’s leadership team alike – who remain in frequent discourse till today. A working group was founded, protests were organized, and application procedures taking into account the extenuating circumstances were formulated. We thank the members of our community who gave up their spare time to help us (particularly those who are not members of the Body of Student Representatives) – without your help we would not have been able to make the impact we did! We are particularly proud of the apparel and food donations we amassed – a fantastic collective achievement!

In summary, the term 21/22 definitely was one thing for the Stuve – busy. Our parliament – the Student Council – passed 13 Position Papers, we founded 4 new working groups, attended 10 Bavarian Student Representative Conferences, and represented you in over different 40 different Committees! Since January alone we have processed over 150 room requests for various events and thus stimulated student life again – and this is in the midst of a staff change in our secretariat, which has now been temporarily managed by students for almost 5 months. We look forward to the upcoming academic year with the new (and old) faces in the Stuve and the secretariat, but more importantly, we look forward to all we will achieve together!

News from the Stuve

The lecture-free period for the members of the Stuve started not only with the usual exam time, but also with the second part of the constituent meeting of the newly elected student council (Konvent) on August 5.

Here, among other things, the new Spratis were elected, who will be presented in the next newsletter in 4 weeks. Otherwise, all advertised positions were filled, except for the election of the Commission for Sustainability, which was postponed.

This commission, established last week by the university leadership, has the goal of connecting all status groups and the institutions at FAU and to jointly develop and implement measures. Therefore, the commission will advise the university management on sustainability issues and develop sustainability guidelines. For the students, the Konvent is to propose two voting representatives, who will be elected at the first meeting in October. The term of office runs from the first of October and lasts for two years. You do not have to be a member of the Konvent to be elected. If you have any questions about it, please feel free to contact us at stuve-sprat@fau.de or apply directly at stuve-konvent@fau.de.

On Monday, the FAU was also visited by a delegation from the Greens parliamentary group in the Bavarian state parliament. The Greens parliamentary group is currently visiting Bavarian universities on the topic of university construction and asking about projects that are going well and those that are going badly, needs for change and university-specific concerns, and the FAU kicked off the series of visits.
The chancellor, the university administration, the building office and the green office were present and we as student representatives were also explicitly invited, which were represented by four Spratis that took part in the conversation. First the chancellor presented the status quo of the construction situation with many locations, satellites, rentals and also partly dilapidated building situation and subsequently showed well running and also successfully completed construction projects that have contributed significantly to reducing the renovation backlog at our FAU in recent years. A great deal is still pending, of course, whereby the major projects of the Raspberry Palace + Lecture Hall Center have already completed the realization competition, thus a certain design by certain architectural firms has already been determined and more detailed planning is now underway.
Also a result to the order building procedure of the educational sciences is lining up soon.
The negative aspect here is that the construction office is already working at maximum capacity with the projects currently underway, and in some cases is probably overloaded, so some projects even with available funding still have to wait.
We also discussed in more detail the master plan for the south campus, how the twin lecture halls there are developing and also why the Tentoria, which was previously at this location, was dropped without replacement: no one was found to rebuild a similar structure at a different location and now the project is on ice again for the time being.
In addition, a few exciting new projects were teased and general requirements for teaching and learning spaces of the future were discussed – so the conversation was very exciting and interesting for us – and the Green Party also gave us an ice cube mold, which hopefully will cool down some future meetings at the Sprat.

Studenten bilden Schüler: Organisers wanted!

You can make a valuable contribution to more educational justice in our society! Our non-profit organisation matches students as volunteer tutors with schoolchildren from low-income families for whom paid tutoring is not an option.

Of course, the whole thing doesn’t work without a bit of organisation behind it. We are looking for reinforcement for our three teams:

  • Communication: social media presence, creating advertising material, public relations, fundraising, fun.
  • Pupils: Contact with social institutions, organisation of pupils, fun.
  • Students: Contact with students, arranging tutoring couples, organising get-togethers, fun

Have we caught your interest? Then just write us an e-mail (studenten.erlangen@studenten-bilden-schueler.de) or come to one of our meetings (every second Wednesday at 8 pm in Turnstraße 7, room 01.015).

Our next meeting is on 20.07.2022!

(Of course, we are always looking for committed tutors).

News from the Stuve

In recent days, the Schloss has been able to experience the Stuve in large numbers. The Sprat met there twice with President Prof. Hornegger to talk about topics such as studying at FAU, the creation of the new FAU logo, the branding of the university, and student engagement. Soon we will meet in the Schlossgarten with some people from the university management for the newly introduced “Walk and Talks”, and would like to invite you to join our promenading on 11.07. at 18:00. These talks are open to all students. The Walk and Talk on 11.07. unfortunately had to be postponed due to illness.

But the Stuve was also represented again at the Schlossgartenfest. There, the new laser show was used for the first time which we were able to watch. We were able to network with many people from the university about university life and the work in the Stuve and also enjoy the evening with many of you.

But now it’s back to our in-house festivals; check out our summer festival calendar to see where you can meet up with your friends to network and have fun. The many FSVs, FSIs and university groups have already been planning great events for you for weeks, don’t miss them!

In addition, many campaigns are already underway for the current university elections. At the many information booths and events you can find out which lists are running for what and what they stand for. There are also numerous online news points which have been set up by the Stuve in the last few weeks. Please have a look at the article about the university elections! We are looking forward to a high voter turnout so that we can continue to shape the Stuve in a diverse way next year, so get started at online-wahlen.fau.de!

OneNote users wanted for conversion tests

For a well running conversion of FAU Office 365 to the new license model we are still looking for some students who already use OneNote with the FAU campus license and the cloud features intensively. In order to test how best to migrate the data to the new license and to create a good guide, we are looking for you. If you would like to help, please contact us at stuve-sprat@fau.de.
